BAVC Brainglow

Educational Media Editing Application

The Bay Area Video Coalition, aka BAVC, is the most advanced noncommercial media access and training center in the nation. They are a nonprofit group devoted to teaching inner city youth media literacy and production techniques. They had a series of educational DVD-ROMs dedicated to specific tools, but nothing devoted to the larger issue of teaching digital storytelling...which, oddly enough, is a lot of what I do!

BAVC contracted Fluid to create "Brainglow," an application that teaches youths the typical metaphors and methods of professional media assembly and digital narrative, largely relying on video editing tools. I wound up being the core conceptual designer on the project, and before I knew it, I had spec'd out a way to essentially re-create iMovie in Flash.

It's important to point out that I did not visually design or build out this application - that was done by the able-bodied crew at Fluid (Brian Cherne, Mark Moskal, Dave Hogue and Darren David ). It was my initial direction and conceptual design, fueled by over a decade of professional video editing and motion design experience, that provided the structure for the development and visual design to happen.

However, I am truly the least of it; the real stars of Brainglow are the young filmmakers and storytellers whose work is showcased on the disc. This page had a full credits list of all the talented youngsters involved.
